Penguins

The penguin is a flightless bird.  There are many different types of penguins.  We learned all about Emperor penguins.  We found penguins to be very interesting birds.

The Emperor is the largest of the 17 penguin species.
Emperors are the deepest divers of any bird.
They are also very strong birds.
The mummy lays her egg in mid-May, then leaves to spend the winter at sea.
The daddy spends the next 65 days looking after the egg which he rests on his feet.

In mid-July, when the mummy returns, she finds the daddy by having memorised his call. The daddy penguin carefully gives the egg to the mummy.  The egg hatches soon after.

Emperor chicks grow quickly because they have only five months (that is just from when we started school to now) to reach the stage where they can fend for themselves. (we dont think we are quite ready to leave home just yet)

Penguins eat Antarctic silverfish Pleuragramma antarcticum. They also eat other fish, Antarctic krill and some species of squid

Teddy Bear Hospital

After learning all about old and new teddies last week and how teddies looked through the ages, we learned who would help the sick teddies.  It turns out it is the same person who would help us if we were sick, the doctor!!

We went on a very exciting trip with our sick teddies.  The doctor asked us what was making teddy feel unwell.  We needed to explain to the doctor exaclty what happened and how teddy felt so they could help to make the teddy feel better quickly.  Some teddies fell off the bed and hurt their legs, arms and some even hurt their heads, so the doctors decided these teddy bears would need to have an x-ray to check the bones were not broken.  Some teddies had a pain in their tummies so the doctor gave them a prescription for lots of love and cuddles and a piece of fruit to make their tummies healthy again. Only when the teddies were feeling better their caring owners celebrated by having some fun on the bouncing castles.

Some Of Our Toys

Here are four toys some of the children in junior infants brought to school to show the class.  Three of these toys are around for a long time and one is a new toy.  Ask us to spot the old toys, we are very good at it now.

We made a teddy bear timeline.

(we could own this one)

This is a teddy that Mum and Dad might have had when they were children

This is a very old teddy bear
(Our Granny's and Grandand's could have owned one like this)

If you have any old toys please bring them in and tell us about them , we are very interested in old things!!

Learning about old and new

We have been talking about the old and new things.  We looked at old toys and compared them to the toys we have now.  Some of them are very different but some have hardly changed.  Here are a few of the toys we have looked at.

Maybe mum or dad could show us any of theolir old toys they have at home.
